Cemetery Project
Report on the 2009 Cemetery Project
At the 2008 BBGS meeting, we selected as our 2009 project, the
cleaning and preservation of gravestones in a local cemetery. The
steering committee selected the Isaac "Ikey" Back cemetery on
Quicksand Creek, near Jackson, KY. It is near the Bach Memorial
Church, many Backs are buried there, the County had no accurate
record of who was buried there, and it is accessible without going
mountain climbing.
On Friday morning, October 9, nine members of the BBS met at the
Bach Memorial Church. Team Leaders for the project were Ken and
Ann Holmes who have extensive experience in the cleaning and
preservation of gravestones. Four hour later, forty -two
gravestones had been cleaned, leveled, and where necessary
remounted on their bases. A complete inventory of the
gravestones resulted in a listing of the seventy persons buried
there and a record of all the dates on the stones. That listing has
been turned over to the Breathitt County Library for their records.
That listing is also available on the BBGS website. Ken developed
a Power Point presentation showing the before and after of many of
the stones. That presentation was shown at the Saturday meetings.
A special thanks to the following members who worked so hard to
make this project a success:
